MELBOURNE MARATHON 1956 - 2006
Hi, my name is Peter Moore. I'm an Australian sportsman and I SAY:
LET'S GO FOR IT!
LET'S RUN AND HAVE FUN ON THE MELBOURNE OLYMPIC GAMES MARATHON - 50TH ANNIVERSARY.
Melbourne is my home town, I want the Melbourne marathon in 2006 to use the same course as the Olympic
Games, so I and lots of others can run that course, and commemorate the deeds of legends such as Edwin Flack from Melbourne, who ran in the first Athens Olympic Games Marathon. And Alain
Mimoun, winner of the Melbourne Games Marathon in 1956, the great Emil Zatopek, and the Australians who ran that day, Keith Ollerenshaw, John Russell and Bruce McKay, as well as those who came afterwards, like Ron Clarke, Derek Clayton, Rob Decastella, Steve Moneghetti, Lisa Ondieki, Rod DeHighden, Lee Troop, Kerryn McCann.
As an 8 year old from high up in the Olympic Stand at the Melbourne Stadium (MCG), I watched Vladimir Kuts win on the track, and the High Jump
go on into the dusk. Like many other Melburnians, we had our own Backyard
Olympics, where we dreamed of the future. Some of my friends remember being
taken out along St Kilda Rd and Dandenong Road to watch the Marathon runners pass.
Later, I ran in the Olympic Tyres Marathons, organized bt South Melbounre
Athletic Club at Princes Park and Albert Park, early in December to coincide
with the anniversary of the Olympic Marathon.
In 2000, I ran with many others the Hst City Marathon in Sydney, and came
back a few months later to watch the Sydney Olympic Games Marathon.
