bike servicing TUNE UP AND SERVICE

How often do we recommend?

Every 6 months / 3000km, depending on the conditions the bike has encountered, and how well it has been maintained.

What do we do?
  • Inspect the bike for problems, or potential problems, as we remove the wheels and the chain.
  • Give the frame a wipe over, clean dirt away from bearings.
  • Lube and clean the derailleurs, and lube the brake and gear cables.
  • Clean and lubricate the chain.
  • Remove and clean cassette if warranted.
  • Check wheel bearings for adjustment and wear, check spoke tension and wheel trueness.
  • Pump grease into front hub.
  • Clean braking surface of rims.
  • Inspect tyres for cuts and glass, check inflation pressure.
  • Clean faces of brake blocks.
  • Check for play in bottom bracket and head bearings.
  • Check operation of suspension forks.
  • Check tightness of mudguards, racks, lights etc.
  • Check pedal bearing adjustment.
  • Adjust brakes and gears.
  • Check that seatpost and headstem will move in frame and fork.

What does it cost?

A basic charge of $45 including GST covers Labour. Any parts required are at additional cost. We will give you an Estimate of cost when you bring the bike in; we will ring you for approval to proceed if during the work we find extras which would cost more than $10 above the original Estimate.

We will charge extra Labour if wheels need to be straightened in the truing stand, rather than minor work while in the bike.

Any other jobs you specify can be done at the same time, generally at a lower Labour charge than if done separately. Changing tyres or tubes, retaping handlebars, fitting racks or computers

bike servicing SUSPENSION FORKS

Manufacturer's recommendations for servicing of suspendion forks are typically measured in hours of use, often as low as 20 to 40 hours. For competition and severe off road riding prompt maintenance is critical. For most users however, we would suggest a complete fork overhaul every 12 months or so. If travel becomes stiff then cleaning and greasing is appropriate. If there is play in the legs then wear has occurred in the bushes, with possible damage to the sliders, and more specialized overhaul is needed.

Disassembly, cleaning and relubrication of spring/elastomer type forks costs $35 combined with a service or overhaul, $40 separately, plus any parts.

For a major overhaul of air/oil type forks, we would send the unit to a specialist, eg in RockShox or Manitou, who can replace bushes as required. Our charge is $20 for removing and refitting the forks, plus freight charges. Additional cost will typically be $80 to $150, depending on what parts are required.
